New Braunfels group works to make Christmas special for young adults with disabilities

A local holiday effort is bringing the spirit of giving to a group of young adults with developmental disabilities served by Decade Day Service.

SAN ANTONIO — Decade Day Service founder Jonathan Fraley and his cousin, volunteer Colton Floyd, are working to collect enough Christmas gifts, sensory items and celebration supplies for roughly 17 to 20 participants in the program.

“Above all, they’re just a tight group of friends, and they deserve the world,” Fraley said. “The kindest hearts. The most giving, caring people that I know.”

Floyd says many of the young adults live in group homes, where donated gifts are the norm. This year, he says they want something different.

“A lot of these kids come from group homes,” Floyd said. “And a lot of their presents are just donated, and they never really get to pick their presents. This year, that’s what we’re going to change.”

Beyond Christmas, Fraley says financial support helps maintain the group’s year-round outings, including trips to Morgan’s Wonderland, bowling, the gym, movies and other community activities.

“We eat together, we go shopping together, we play disc golf together,” he said. “We do everything.”

Decade Day Service is close to reaching its fundraising goal and is asking the community to help them finish strong through their GoFundMe page.

“It’s important to let them know other people are thinking about them,” Floyd said. “We just try to give them the most normal life that we can.”
