District officials say they’re going to review nearly 200,000 books to make sure they’re in line with Senate Bill 13.
NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — New Braunfels ISD says all library services are suspended until further notice as the district reviews each book in accordance with new state laws.
That decision comes after Monday’s board of trustees meeting.
District officials say they’re going to review nearly 200,000 books to make sure they’re in line with Senate Bill 13 which requires schools to prohibit books deemed harmful, indecent or profane.
If a book has any of this material, it will be removed from the library.
Another change with Senate Bill 13 includes the board of trustees approving any new or donated book in the library moving forward. This used to be a shared decision between all district staff.
To get middle schoolers and high school students back in the books, the board of trustees will provide resources to speed up the review process.
Elementary schools in New Braunfels ISD are exempt from the library suspension.
New Braunfels ISD says they have more than 50,000 titles in their secondary schools.
After all current books are reviewed, moving forward, the board will make an advisory committee to help the superintendent make these decisions on books.
