New Braunfels man arrested in eviction-turned-standoff that prompted evacuation of nearby elementary school

The district said they expect students to be able to return to school as normal but if anything changes, they will update families promptly.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — A heavy police presence in a nearby neighborhood had caused Voss Farms Elementary School to be placed on a secure status, according to police.

New Braunfels Police Department posted on social media that the heavy police presence is in a Voss Farms neighborhood. The incident is confined to a single home, according to the post.

Around 10 a.m., NBPD responded to the 2000 block of Carter Lane and found a man alone, armed and barricaded inside the residence.

Preliminary reports show the offense of an aggravated assault of a public servant had taken place and a search and arrest warrant for John Michael Herrmann was obtained.

Out of precaution, the nearby Voss Farms Elementary has been placed on a secure status.

Secure is called when there is a threat or hazard outside of the school building, according to the Texas State Texas School Safety Center.

New Braunfels ISD released a statement saying that students and staff were relocated to Legend Point Elementary as a precaution before beginning the process of releasing students around 2:30 p.m.

NBPD says that over the course of the six-hour incident, authorities negotiated with Herrmann and tried to get him to surrender voluntarily.

“The suspect was given ample opportunity to resolve the situation without further incident,” NBPD said.

Around 4:15 p.m., the NBPD SWAT Team entered the home and arrested Herrmann.

Herrmann has been taken to the Guadalupe County Jail and faces a charge of aggravated assault of a public servant, with a bond set at $250,000.

“There were no injuries to officers or civilians during this event. Investigators remain on scene. The public is asked to avoid the area while officers are on scene. This is believed to be an isolated incident and there are no additional threats to the community,” said NBPD.

The district said they expect students to be able to return to school as normal but if anything changes, they will update families promptly.
