New Braunfels man charged with arson after clothes set ablaze near home, authorities say

Gilbert Hernandez, 36, faces arson charges for allegedly trying to set a New Braunfels home on fire.

SAN ANTONIO — A man is accused of trying to intentionally set a home on fire in a New Braunfels neighborhood earlier this week, according to a city press release.

Gilbert Hernandez, 36, was charged with Arson, a second degree felony following an investigation.

According to the release, the New Braunfels Police Department was called to a home in the 2200 block of West Bridge Street for a report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers learned that the resident of the home had woken up to discover multiple plastic bags of clothing were on fire outside of a detached garage. The resident was able to put the fire out using a water hose and then called police. No injuries were reported and there was no damage to nearby structures.

Officials said the New Braunfels Fire Marshal’s Office opened an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined that the fire was intentionally set. Further investigations lead authorities to Hernandez as a suspect.

According to the release, Friday around 6 a.m. the New Braunfels Police Department SWAT Team and the Fire Marshal’s Office executed an arrest warrant and search warrant at a home in the 200 block of South Grape Avenue. Hernandez was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Comal County jail.

Officials said Hernandez also had an outstanding warrant for Assault of a Family Member/Household Member with Previous Conviction, out of Comal County, and that warrant was also served. His bond was set at $25,000.

This is an ongoing investigation and additional charges may be pending.
