New Braunfels man sentenced to 50 years for violent attack, threats against ex-girlfriend

Joshua Bermea was sentenced to 40 years in prison for burglary and an additional 10 years for drug possession, for a total of 50 years.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — A New Braunfels man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after a months-long case involving threats, harassment and a violent attack against his ex-girlfriend.

Joshua Bermea, 20, pleaded guilty to multiple charges stemming from a series of incidents in 2023 that escalated over time, according to authorities.

The case began in September 2023, when the victim reported to New Braunfels police that Bermea was following her in his vehicle and making threats. Investigators say he also threatened to crash into her car.

On Nov. 8, Bermea sent the woman about 250 text messages in a single day, many of them threatening to kill her and harm her family. Police said the following day, Bermea broke into the woman’s home and assaulted her, including choking her. After leaving, investigators say Bermea sent another message warning that no one was there to protect her and that he would return.

Bermea was sentenced to 40 years in prison for burglary and an additional 10 years for drug possession, for a total of 50 years.
