As the rush to save the baby was underway, investigators returned to her home with a search warrant, looking for evidence.
SAN ANTONIO — The Frio County Sheriff’s report on the incident says the initial call for help came from a Nolan Road mobile home community in Pearsall.
The report indicates a mom called 911 to say she was rushing her unresponsive baby to the local hospital.
As soon as 10-month-old Nylah Gonzales arrived at Frio Regional Hospital, investigators said the call was made to send the badly injured little girl to San Antonio by helicopter for more intensive care. But as the rush to save the baby was underway, investigators returned to her home with a search warrant, looking for evidence.
All they are admitting to so far is that the mother’s boyfriend, 28 year old Deion Salazar, was arrested and charged with drug possession after detectives said they found 100 grams of cocaine and other drugs already packaged for sale.
Jail records indicate Salazar was in and out of jail on bonds totaling $120,000 in less than 24 hours on two felony drug charges. Peter Salinas with the Frio County Sheriff’s Office said “It’s a very complicated investigation. We have to make sure we are very thorough.” Sheriff’s Investigators said they are getting help with the case from Texas Rangers but results may take time.
“We are awaiting more information from the medical staff that have attended to the child so far. Once we have that information, it will kind of steer us in the direction that we need to move from here,” Salinas said.
Salinas said his promise is that the investigation into the baby’s injuries will be aggressive and thorough.
