BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — New details are emerging in a crash last week that resulted in a pregnant woman losing her baby.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office arrested 30-year-old Alexander Diaz Mendoza, charging him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection to the February 19 crash at the intersection of Woodlake Parkway and Binz-Engleman Road.
According to an arrest warrant, Mendoza was driving 75 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone when he allegedly ran a red light around 9:30 p.m., causing a four-vehicle crash. One of the vehicles was flipped into a ditch.
Authorities say the pregnant driver was transported to the hospital, where she underwent surgery and the baby later died.
Deputies reported that Mendoza appeared to be slurring his words and smelled of alcohol at the scene. Investigators also noted an open beer bottle with alcohol still inside on the passenger-side floorboard of his vehicle.
Sheriff Javier Salazar said Mendoza’s current charge is based on the injuries sustained by the woman. However, additional charges could be filed pending toxicology results.
“Now we are still waiting on the results of the Intoxilyzer,” Salazar said. “And once we obtain these results, if indeed it does show that he was intoxicated to that level, and that directly led to the death of the child, he may additionally face charges of intoxication manslaughter in connection with the baby as well.”
Mendoza was taken into custody from a nearby military base. Authorities previously clarified he is a civilian employee there.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges are possible. KENS 5 will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
