This is the second ramp to open on the Loop 1604 north expansion project.
SAN ANTONIO — Some relief for drivers on the northwest side as a new flyover ramp opens Monday as part of TxDOT’s Loop 1604 North Expansion Project.
It’s the second ramp to be finished as crews continue to work on the interchange that is set to be completed in 2027. This new ramp will connect drivers from I-10 westbound to Loop 1604 westbound by Kyle Seale Parkway.
The first flyover ramp opened in December 2024 connecting Loop 1604 eastbound to I-10 westbound. A third flyover will open later this year, and all eight flyovers are expected to open by the end of 2026. TxDOT District Engineer Charles Benavidez said the ramp opening Monday is 101 feet high, 1.3 miles long and constructed with 3.9 million pounds of steel. It was also made possible with 120,000 cubic yards of concrete!
Construction began a few years ago, which has led to regular disruptions for drivers. Moving forward Benavidez said the closures will continue but on a much smaller scale to help crews stay on schedule with construction.
When finished, Benavidez said the interchange will be built to accommodate traffic levels immediately and years down the road.
“We project this, the traffic in this area to double almost 300,000 vehicles per day,” Benavidez said. “Right now, we are at about 150,000 so we are building the projects we need today and to accommodate traffic in the future. Even with 1604, all six segments complete. We anticipate that in 20 years it will still reduce congestion by 76 percent.”
The interchange is 62 percent complete, according to TxDOT. For more on the project, visit this website.
