SAN ANTONIO — This is a brand new flyover ramp for you to drive on Monday morning on the northwest side of San Antonio.
It’s a little over a mile long and will connect you from I-10 West, just past UTSA Boulevard, to Loop 1604 West by Kyle Seale Parkway.
The ramp officially opens Monday but we got to tour this ramp last week.
This is the second ramp to open on the Loop 1604 North Expansion Project.
It’s tall, at about 100 feet high and built with 3.9 million pounds of steel, and a lot of concrete, too.
Construction began a few years ago, which has led to some disruptions in traffic. TxDOT says the closures will continue but they will be on a much smaller scale.
This will help them finish the interchange, which is being built to last decades.
“We project this, the traffic in this area to double to almost 300,000 vehicles per day,” said Charles Benavidez, District Engineer, TxDOT. “Right now, we are at about 150,000 so we are building the projects we need today and to accommodate traffic in the future. Even with 1604, all six segments complete. We anticipate that in 20 years it will still reduce congestion by 76 percent.”
The latest progress report from TxDOT indicates that crews are more than halfway finished with the interchange. As of Monday, two flyover ramps are complete, with six more under construction.
TxDOT says the next one will open later this year.
