New flyover ramp opens in San Antonio, easing congestion for thousands on Loop 1604 and I-10

Drivers on San Antonio’s northwest side celebrate a smoother commute as a new flyover ramp opens at Loop 1604 and I-10.

SAN ANTONIO — A major milestone was reached Thursday for drivers on San Antonio’s northwest side with the opening of the newest flyover ramp at Loop 1604 and Interstate 10, marking the final flyover of a massive interchange project years in the making.

After years of lane shifts, detours and construction zones, drivers now have a new direct connection from westbound Loop 1604 to westbound I-10. The ramp opened around 5 a.m. Thursday, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

“That marks the eighth flyover that we’ve opened in just over a year,” said Jennifer Serold with TxDOT.

The ramp allows drivers to enter just past Lockhill Selma Road and merge onto westbound I-10 near La Cantera Boulevard. The project has caused significant delays for commuters traveling to popular destinations such as The Rim, La Cantera and Six Flags Fiesta Texas as crews constructed what will ultimately become a five-level interchange.

Serold said the work was completed ahead of the original schedule, which called for all flyovers to be finished by the end of the year.

“It was very intensive work,” she said. “They were lifting steel beams and pouring concrete 120 feet in the air.”

Construction on the Loop 1604 North Expansion Project began in 2024 and is part of a $1.4 billion effort to widen the highway from four lanes to 10, including the addition of HOV lanes in both directions. Once completed, TxDOT estimates commutes could be reduced by as much as 80 minutes.

“The good news is we’re over that hump of building that five-level interchange,” Serold said.

Despite the milestone, work is far from finished. TxDOT says drivers can still expect periodic closures along frontage roads beneath the interchange as crews complete drainage work and widen bridges to accommodate five lanes in each direction.

The interchange is about 70 percent complete, with full completion expected within the next couple of years.
