New Fort Hood signage installed at Frank W. Mayborn Gate

New Fort Hood signage has been officially installed at the Frank W. Mayborn Gate.

FORT HOOD, Texas — The new Fort Hood signage at the Frank W. Mayborn Gate was officially installed this morning.

The signage, which bears the name “Fort Hood,” replaces the previous “Fort Cavazos” lettering at the prominent gate located off U.S. Highway 190 in Killeen.

The name change honors Col. Robert B. Hood, a decorated World War I veteran recognized for extraordinary heroism in battle. Hood received the Distinguished Service Cross for his leadership under fire near Thiaucourt, France, where he directed artillery fire amid intense shelling and machine-gun attacks. After the loss of his gun crew, Capt. Hood swiftly reorganized and returned fire, restoring combat capability within minutes.

The change comes after a federal commission recommended renaming several military installations named after Confederate figures, including Fort Hood, which had been renamed Fort Cavazos in 2023 in honor of Gen. Richard E. Cavazos, the first Hispanic four-star general in the U.S. Army.
