More on the Astrodome
The Houston Astrodome had its heyday. Hundreds of Houston Oilers football games, Astros baseball games, and way more sporting events were played on the famous astroturf.
After nearly four decades of performances, the Dome had its curtain call with George Strait, who performed at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 2002.
The dome officially closed in 2009. Since then, we’ve heard several pitches for the Astrodome’s future: movie studio, hotel and convention center, stripping down the dome to its steel frame, or complete demolition.
In 2015, former Harris County Judge Ed Emmett went to Germany for inspiration, touring Tropical Island, repurposed out of an old blimp hangar. Since then, the dome still sits in silence.
In 2016, the Astrodome Conservancy formed as a private nonprofit to preserve the Astrodome’s legacy.
In 2018, Harris County commissioners approved $105 million to renovate the Astrodome to build a parking garage and create usable event space only to see the plan later put on hold.
After years of public input, the Conservancy is ready to present “Vision: Astrodome.”
“What has gone into It is a lot of creativity, a lot of hard work, trying to figure out a way that we can make a project like this work financially, so we’ve done feasibility studies. It’s going to be great,” Tudor said. “What they’re going to see tomorrow is an exciting concept…it will be supported by financial information to show how it can be done.”
The announcement is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
