SAN ANTONIO — New rainbow sidewalks will be formally unveiled this weekend in the city’s Pride Cultural Heritage District, marking a new chapter for LGBTQIA visibility in San Antonio.
The project comes after the rainbow crosswalks at Main Avenue and Evergreen Street were removed earlier this year at the direction of Greg Abbott.
City officials recently completed repairs to the walkways and expanded the design, adding new colors to the rainbow to show support for LGBTQ people of color and the transgender community.
Work began last month and took about two to three weeks to complete. The updated sidewalks now span two blocks within the Pride Cultural Heritage District.
Members of the city’s LGBTQIA advisory board say the original crosswalks, which had been a staple on the Strip since 2018, will take on new life. Portions of the removed crosswalk have been transformed into cylinders that will be displayed in local museums and art installations.
Michael Rendon, chair of the city’s LGBTQIA advisory board, said despite recent back-and-forth surrounding the crosswalks, visibility remains essential.
“In 2026, there’s certain individuals, certain people of our community that still feel unwelcome and unsafe,” Rendon said. “This strip represents a place where people can come from the LGBTQ community and our allies and come and celebrate, build community. It’s a space where we can come together, be ourselves and welcome everyone from our community.”
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Rendon said the celebration will include live performances.
