New Spurs downtown arena rendering expected to be revealed; Austin Spurs announce new head coach

San Antonio and Spurs fans may see new renderings of the proposed downtown Spurs arena on Thursday.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Spurs fans and residents may get their first look at what the Spurs’ proposed downtown arena and entertainment district will look like when the City Council meets this Thursday.

According to the recent Spurs Sports & Entertainment and the city’s draft deal or term sheet, an attachment is titled “District, Arena Site, and Private Development Area.” It states it will be “inserted prior to City Council Action.”

There is a previous rendering that reflects what the arena and Project Marvel could look like, and it is an open question whether this new rendering will be the same or different from what has been previously released.

The proposed arena alone is expected to cost approximately $1.3 billion. The Spurs have committed, per their submitted term sheet, $500 million towards the construction and will cover all cost overruns.

Ahead of the anticipated meeting, Spurs’ RC Buford released a statement on the process, highlighting the franchise’s commitment.

“We’re pleased to take this next step in the process, which will ultimately give the voters the opportunity to decide on the arena project this November. As part of the proposed term sheet, the Spurs total commitment will be $2.1 billion. What has been consistent throughout this process is our commitment to ensure no tax impact on San Antonio families and our assurance to cover 100% of any and all construction cost overruns. From our very first conversations with city leaders, this has always been about more than a venue. It’s about building a place that fosters opportunity, creates lasting memories and ensures San Antonio continues to thrive for generations to come.

We’re grateful to the San Antonio City Council, City Manager Erik Walsh, Judge Peter Sakai and the Bexar County Commissioners for the time and commitment they’ve invested in this process. Their leadership has been invaluable in helping us reach this milestone and we look forward to continuing this work together on behalf of the people of San Antonio and Bexar County.”

AUSTIN SPURS ANNOUNCE NEW HEAD COACH

The Austin Spurs, the San Antonio Spurs’ G League affiliate, announced  Jacob Chance as the team’s new head coach, making him the 11th head coach in franchise history.

According to the Austin Spurs, Chance joins the team after two seasons as an assistant coach with Melbourne United in the National Basketball League, helping guide the team to playoff appearances in both seasons.

A native of Perth, Western Australia, Chance began his coaching career in 2015 as a video and development coach with the Perth Wildcats, eventually becoming an assistant coach in 2019. During his time with the club, he was part of four NBL championships (2016, 2017, 2019, 2020). In 2019, he also coached at the youth level, leading the U16 WA Metro State Team at the 2019 National Championships. He served as head coach of the Hawke’s Bay Hawks (NZNBL) in 2021 before spending two seasons (2021–23) as associate head coach for the Tasmania JackJumpers, helping guide the expansion team to back-to-back postseason appearances, including a Grand Final berth in 2022.

Chance replaces 2024-25 NBA G League Coach of the Year Scott King, who joined the San Antonio Spurs bench.
