SAN ANTONIO — Grab the sunscreen and the walking shoes, parks across San Antonio and surrounding communities are getting a major upgrade.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission has awarded a record-breaking $21.2 million in local park grants, bringing new life to parks from the heart of San Antonio to nearby cities like Leon Valley, New Braunfels, Castroville and the Texas Hill Country.
In San Antonio, the city received a $1.5 million urban outdoor recreation grant for improvements to Pearsall Park on the West Side, including a bike track, new lighting, shade structures and a perimeter track, making one of the city’s most popular parks even better for families and outdoor lovers.
Just outside the city, Leon Valley landed more than $725,000 to renovate the Forest Oaks Pool, while New Braunfels will use nearly $701,000 to build a new neighborhood park on Coll Street with an accessible playground, pavilion and walking paths.
Further west, Castroville received funding to add an inclusive playground and sensory features at Lion’s Park, and Pearsall will see a splash pad, inclusive playground and shaded picnic areas added to the Victor Trevino Sports Complex.
In the Hill Country, Wimberley was awarded $750,000 for improvements at Blue Hole Regional Park, including a new playground, additional parking, an amphitheater and gathering space, native landscaping, trails, shade structures, rainwater catchment systems, lighting and updated signage.
In total, 50 community parks across Texas will gain new trails, playgrounds, splash pads, sports fields and kayak launches, all with the promise that once improved, the land stays parkland forever.
Bottom line: whether you’re chasing kids, walking the dog, or just looking for a shady spot to relax, the San Antonio area is about to get a whole lot greener. 🌳
