An officer is heard worrying for his wife, a teacher who died protecting her students.
UVALDE, Texas — The release of Uvalde County files related to the Robb Elementary massacre shows a devastating picture of responding officers trying to get answers about their loved ones.
We are seeing the real-time realization of two officials trying to get help for their loved ones when they realized they might be in the impacted classrooms.
One of the clips is nearly 40 minutes long and shows then-Uvalde CISD Officer Ruben Ruiz trying to get to his wife Eva Mireles after the gunman was killed. Ruiz had been seen in previously released clips trying to get to Mireles, but officers are seen holding him back.
“Ruben! They’re calling you,” an unseen officer said.
“My wife’s in there,” Ruiz said.
Mireles was a fourth-grade teacher at Robb Elementary. She was injured while shielding her Classroom 112 students from gunfire. They are injuries she ultimately died from.
Mireles is one of the two teachers and 19 students who were killed in May 2022.
“Do we have kids in there?” an unknown officer asked.
We know the tragic answer to be yes. Among the 19 is Felix Rubio’s daughter, Lexi Rubio.
Felix responded to Robb on May 24 as a member of the Uvalde County Sheriff’s Office. He’s seen throughout the new body camera videos both inside and outside the school, looking amid the chaos for any answers about Lexi.
“I just want to see my baby. I don’t know. I have no idea. A St. Mary’s sweater — that’s all I know,” Felix said, describing the clothing Lexi was wearing.
Officers are seen helping hold Felix up as they search for answers to no avail. At one point they said someone they call “The Chief” can help.
“I know. I know. Let’s go talk to him first. We’re not doing any good standing here. Let’s go talk to Chief,” an unknown officer said.
Text messages also made public Tuesday reveal Uvalde County Sheriff Ruben Nolasco texted Felix the day after the massacre, telling him he’s here for whatever is needed.
Felix responded, “Boss, I just want my baby back.”
