SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio is known for its colorful and meaningful murals, and now, a brand new one is adding to the city’s growing public art scene just west of downtown.
The “Comunidad Primero,” or “Community First,” mural was officially unveiled Wednesday outside University Health’s Robert B. Green campus near West Martin Street and Interstate 10.
The mural stretches an impressive 144 feet wide, about half the length of a football field, and highlights the vibrant history and cultural spirit of San Antonio’s West Side.
According to Community First Health Plans, the public artwork honors generations of families, traditions and everyday life that have shaped the neighborhood.
The piece features two trailblazing Mexican American leaders: Jovita Idar, a journalist and civil rights advocate, and Ildaura Murillo-Rohde, a nurse who founded the National Association of Hispanic Nurses.
The mural was created by artists participating in the San Antonio Street Art Initiative’s Brick By Brick career-development program, emphasizing both artistic talent and deep community collaboration.
It also includes imagery of iconic West Side landmarks, such as the original Robert B. Green Memorial Hospital and the Community First Avenida Guadalupe office, along with scenes reflecting neighborhood homes and daily life.
Community First Health Plans sponsored the project, while University Health provided the wall space for the mural.
“We are proud to help bring this mural to life — a piece that reflects the heart of the West Side and uplifts the people who make this community extraordinary,” said Theresa Rodriguez Scepanski, president and CEO of Community First Health Plans.
The mural is now on display for the public to enjoy near the Robert B. Green campus.
