NIOSA rain rock rises Monday to help keep Fiesta skies clear

The quirky San Antonio tradition is believed to scare off bad weather before A Night in Old San Antonio begins.

SAN ANTONIO — It may sound unusual—but in San Antonio, it’s serious Fiesta business.

The legendary NIOSA Rain Rock ceremony takes place Monday morning at La Villita Historic Arts Village, where the famous limestone rock will be raised outside NIOSA headquarters on South Presa Street.

Its mission? Keep the rain away.

The decades-old tradition happens every year before A Night in Old San Antonio, one of Fiesta’s biggest and most beloved celebrations.

The ritual dates back to the late 1970s, when organizers worried stormy April weather could dampen the outdoor fundraiser. A volunteer reportedly suggested hanging a Texas limestone rock with a natural hole to ward off bad weather—and a tradition was born.

Since then, many locals swear by the Rain Rock’s powers.

Whenever it goes up, supporters say pleasant weather seems to follow.

Whether it’s superstition, luck or classic San Antonio charm, the ceremony has become one of Fiesta’s most treasured pre-party moments.

NIOSA runs four nights at La Villita and raises money to support preservation efforts and scholarships.

So if skies stay sunny this week, don’t thank the forecast.

Thank the rock.
