COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Marcel Reed threw for 289 yards and four touchdowns, and Texas A&M opened the season with a 42-24 win over UTSA on Saturday night.
Reed, who is entering his first full season as the Aggies’ starting quarterback, spread the ball around in a balanced passing attack that helped A&M pull away after halftime. Transfers KC Concepcion and Mario Craver made an immediate impact, each catching two touchdown passes. Craver led all receivers with 122 yards, including a 55-yard scoring grab in the second quarter that put the Aggies ahead for good.
The Aggies (1-0) built a 21-10 halftime lead and kept pressure on the Roadrunners with Reed’s efficiency in the red zone. Concepcion’s second touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter extended the margin to 35-17 and effectively sealed the win.
Texas A&M’s defense limited UTSA’s big-play chances, holding the Roadrunners to short completions and forcing them into third-and-long situations throughout the night. The Aggies also capitalized on two turnovers, both of which led to scoring drives.
The Aggies will host Utah State for their next match up.
