FORT WORTH, Texas — A pair of North Texas children with a tie to Camp Mystic raised money for the camp after it was ravaged in the devastating floods in Central Texas over the July 4 weekend.
Corrigan and Cannon Camp, both just nine years old, sold lemonade and cookies for $1 on Sunday outside their home near the TCU campus in Fort Worth. Corrigan had reportedly just returned from Camp Mystic about two weeks ago. Our content partners at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram report that Cannon had also attended nearby Camp La Junta, where all 380 campers and counselors escaped the floodwaters.
The cookies on offer were “Tweety” cookies — the same ones a co-owner of Camp Mystic would give to some lucky campers, Corrigan told WFAA. Camp Mystic was co-owned by Dick and Tweety Eastland. Dick Eastland died trying to protect campers from the floodwaters, as our sister station KENS reported.
“We really just want to give Camp Mystic money to help rebuild,” Cannon said.
At the end of the day, the children had raised $5,000 to support the flood relief, the Star-Telegram reported, and are planning to do it again this weekend.
“The Tanglewood community really showed up,” Lisa Camp told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “It was just incredible. Everybody was so friendly and wanted to talk and to share how they were affected and just kind of grieve together, even though we’re strangers.”
Officials have reported that 27 campers and counselors from Camp Mystic died in the devastating floods, with five campers and a counselor still missing.
“Our hearts are broken alongside our families that are enduring this unimaginable tragedy,” a message on Camp Mystic’s website reads. “We are praying for them constantly. We have been in communication with local and state authorities who are tirelessly deploying extensive resources to search for our missing girls. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from community, first responders, and officials at every level.”
