North Texas man accused of murdering store clerks over lottery tickets

A North Texas man is currently in jail on capital murder charges after he allegedly shot two corner store clerks during a robbery without giving one of them any chance to comply with his demands. Msequite police arrested Davonta Mathis, 21, on June 22 and is accused of shooting and killing two store clerks so he could allegedly steal lottery tickets, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by MySA.

Mathis allegedly shot and killed 60-year-old Muhammad Hussain on June 20 at store in Mesquite, Texas, according to a news release, and then allegedly shot and killed another man, 32-year-old Gopi Dasari, on June 21 in Dallas. Mathis allegedly shot the men and stole lottery tickets. He hoped the prize money would be enough to get him an apartment, Mathis later told investigators.

Mesquite police spotted Mathis in a tuck stolen from Austin on June 22 and attempted to pull him over, resulting in a chase. Police eventually stopped and arrested Mathis but during this time he told police that he would shoot himself but he couldn’t find his gun, according to Fox 4.

After his arrest, Mathis told investigators that he shot Hussain in the chest without saying anything to him, court records says. He also told investigators that “he is not racist” but shot Hussain “because of the way he looked.” When investigators asked Mathis to clarify his statement, he said he wouldn’t have shot a white man because he felt a white man would have cooperated with the robbery. Mathis shot Dasari because that store didn’t have any lottery tickets.

Mathis also admitted to shooting to Dasari. Mathis is currently being held in Dallas County jail on murder and evading arrest charges. His total bond is currently set at $12.5 million.
