SAN ANTONIO — The biggest school district in the greater San Antonio area welcomed students back to class Monday.
Northside ISD, following suit with other districts, pushed their first day up a week, which also means the school district will end by Memorial Day.
“I think that we’re at a crossroads, with public education and how we’re providing public education services across the state,” Dr. John Craft, superintendent with Northside ISD said. “With ESAS passing, the new voucher on the horizon in the 26-27 school year, of course, the banning of telecommunication devices and many other policy matters. Funding, not to be, you know, an exemption, I think parents need to be, like I say, engaged.”
Regarding the ban on technology, Dr. Craft states their policy is to have students place their cell phones in their backpacks during the duration of the school day. If parents need to reach their students, Dr. Craft explains they can contact the front office.
“I think it’s a balance of mutual respect between the student as well as the faculty or the teachers,” he said. “And then also parent support, knowing that our focus is really, to be very, very intently on teaching and learning because we want our students to come prepared to school each and every day to learn.”
This year the district is celebrating a milestone at Locke Hill Elementary School which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the district this November.
“Last year we actually celebrated a 25th, time capsule reveal where we had quite a few families and, former staff here,” Melissa De Hoyos, principal for Locke Hill Elementary said. “We’re looking to an even bigger, group of, students, staff in to participate in November when we have our big celebration.”
