October has haunted the Aggies of the past… Here’s why Texas A&M Football hasn’t started 7-0 in the last 30 years

As the rest of the college football world waits on the Aggies to “Aggie,” this 2025 troupe has a chance break the trend of fumbling before reaching the 7-0 mark.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — For the past 30 seasons, Aggie fans have known the end of October to be the time everything seems to disintegrated in front of their eyes regardless of how good the team was playing the weeks prior. But is this Mike Elko led squad, who rides off the back of a high-flying offense and dominates opponents on the defensive side of the ball, the troupe of cadets that can break the decadesold curse of fumbling their season before reaching the 7-0 mark?

Lets take a look at the Aggies’ last chances at starting their season with seven-straight wins:

1994

Texas A&M ended their 1994 season 10-0-1, the last time the program started 7-0, under the helm of head coach R. C. Slocum with six of those wins coming against Southwest Conference (SWC) opponents. Unfortunately, the Aggies were deemed ineligible from conference title contention, postseason play and the Coaches Poll.

Even though the Aggies nearly swept the table that year, Baylor, Rice, TCU, Texas Tech and Texas shared the SWC Championship with a conference record of 4-3, respectfully.

 2012

This wasn’t a season where the Aggies started 6-0, but this was the first season the program joined the SEC and rose Johnny “Football” Manziel to super stardom before fumbling a huge matchup in Week 7 that killed their National Championship hopes.

In the first game of that year, Texas A&M opened some eyes as they almost squeaked out a victory against a ranked Florida team in their first-ever SEC matchup.

The Aggies went on the win their next five games in a row before Week 7 and the #6 LSU Tigers came along.

A&M had a chance to win but ultimately fell 24-19, adding their second loss of the season and essentially taking them out of title contention.

Which hurt even more when Manziel had his Heisman solidifying moment just weeks later when they traveled to Tuscaloosa and beat #1 Alabama in their house.

Manziel and the Aggies rattled off six wins in a row to finish the season, won the Cotton Bowl and ended the year as the fifth best team across the land.

2016

After clawing out two overtime wins against #16 UCLA to start the season and then #9 Tennessee in Week 6, the Aggies were hoping to mirror the success they had when they traveled back to Tuscaloosa to face off against another #1-ranked Crimson Tide team.

But that mirror shattered as Alabama started hot and kept their foot on the gas the whole way to cruise to an easy 33-14 win over A&M.

This set the stage for the rest of that season as they went through a gauntlet to end the year with an 8-5 record after starting 6-0.

This is what became the trend for years to come as Aggie fans have seen several teams give them hope to start the year, just to end in a bowl game or right on the bubble of the College Football Playoffs.

Can this Texas A&M squad break the mold or become a spore in the Aggies bittersweet lore?
