AUSTIN, Texas — An off-duty Austin police officer was killed early Saturday in a motorcycle crash in Comal County.
Det. Israel Garcia was pronounced dead at a hospital in San Marcos following the single-vehicle crash.
It is being investigated by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis notified the department in an email on Saturday morning.
“Please keep the entire Garcia family, Detective Garcia’s fellow officers (including DARRT and Auxiliary Motors Unit), and his brother-in-law – who works with the Austin Fire Department – in your thoughts and prayers,” Davis wrote.
Garcia was most recently assigned to downtown rapid response team.
