Off-duty Bexar County deputy arrested on DWI charge, faces dismissal amid ongoing investigation

BCSO said Sgt. Veronica Sanchez has been placed on paid administrative leave pending termination following her arrest on Tuesday.

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — An off-duty deputy with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office was arrested early Tuesday on a charge of driving while intoxicated, according to officials.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said 44-year-old Sgt. Veronica Sanchez was taken into custody by the San Antonio Police Department at approximately 2:19 a.m. on a DWI charge.

According to BCSO, Sanchez has been employed with the agency for 13 years.

The sheriff’s office said Sanchez has been issued a notice of proposed dismissal and placed on paid administrative leave pending termination.

SAPD is conducting a criminal investigation into the incident, according to BCSO. At the same time, the sheriff’s office has launched a separate internal investigation.

In a statement, Sheriff Javier Salazar said Sanchez had been a “popular and respected” member of the agency but emphasized that deputies are held to a higher standard, particularly those in supervisory roles.

“I do not expect her career to survive this huge violation of the public trust,” Salazar said.

No additional details about the arrest were released.
