Officer-involved crash sends two SAPD officers to hospital, driver suffers minor injuries

The two officers in the patrol car were taken to the hospital for precaution because all the airbags deployed in unit.

SAN ANTONIO — An officer-involved crash on the city’s south-side sent two San Antonio Police Department officers to the hospital on Thursday afternoon, according to an SAPD incident report.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. in the 800 block of West Hutchins Place near Commercial Avenue. Officers had been dispatched with authorization to run code to an assault-in-progress call in the 900 block of West Formosa Boulevard when the crash happened.

According to police, a 46-year-old man was driving westbound on W. Hutchins Place and entered the intersection with a green light. He told investigators his vehicle was struck by an SAPD patrol unit traveling through the intersection.

The impact pushed both vehicles off the roadway and into a private parking lot, where the police cruiser collided with an electrical box. Police say the patrol unit’s airbags deployed, injuring both officers inside the vehicle.

The driver of the car reported minor injuries but did not need to go to hospital. Both officers were taken to a local hospital for precautionary evaluation due to the airbag deployment.

SAPD says the crash remains under active investigation.
