SAN ANTONIO — SAPD says an officer’s death ahead of a training exercise Tuesday, which was initially ruled an accident, has now been ruled a suicide.
Officer William Kasberg was found with a gunshot wound Tuesday morning at the Columbia Heights Elementary School building. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The incident happened as officers were arriving for state-mandated training taking place at that location. The school had recently been closed and no students or staff were present.
Chief William McManus said Tuesday it appeared Kasberg’s death was from an accidental discharge of his pistol as he prepared for the training.
Thursday, SAPD said released a statement saying his death has been ruled a suicide by the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The news release says in part:
“SAPD’s investigation has also discovered evidence to support the medical examiner’s ruling. It appears that Kasberg used a personally owned handgun to commit this act.”
SAPD also said it learned Kasberg was under criminal investigation by the Rockport Police Department over an incident that occurred there, but did not give details of that investigation.
The department said its Wellness Unit, Psychological Services, Peer Support and Department chaplains are available to help SAPD staff during this time.
This is a developing situation and further details will be added as they are received.
