Officials: Loaded rifle magazine found at Ladera Elementary School bathroom

Authorities said no firearm was found on campus, but the student who brought the magazine was “quickly identified.”

SAN ANTONIO — Staff at Ladera Elementary School in far west Bexar County say a loaded .22-caliber rifle magazine was found in a bathroom Tuesday afternoon and the student who brought it identified.

No gun was found at the campus and at no point do authorities believe a threat was made to the school community, Principal Laura Davila told parents and staff in a message. The student in question admitted to bringing the magazine to Ladera, she said, adding it was a school marshal who found the magazine and that the student “does not have access to any firearms at home.”

“Any item of this nature is treated seriously and investigated immediately,” Davila wrote. “We understand that situations like this can cause concern. Please know that the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our top priority, and every report is taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.”

Staff also asked parents to speak with their children about guns and ammunition, and to remind them that they’re never allowed on school grounds lest they risk punishment.

It’s unknown what discipline the student who brought the magazine was facing.

Ladera Elementary School is part of Medina Valley ISD and is located in the area of West Grosenbacher Road and Texas Highway 211.
