Officials say high-rise apartment fire near downtown was started by cigarette on coffee table

Firefighters swiftly contained a ninth-floor apartment fire in downtown San Antonio, blamed on a cigarette, minimizing damage and preventing injuries.

SAN ANTONIO — Firefighters responded to a late-night fire at a high-rise apartment building near downtown San Antonio on Sunday night.

The fire was reported around 10:48 p.m. at the Villa Tranchese Apartments located in the 300 block of Marshall Street.

According to the San Antonio Fire Department, crews arrived to find smoke coming from the ninth floor of the building. A second alarm was called as firefighters worked to locate the source.

Firefighters made entry into an apartment and discovered a small contents fire on a coffee table, which officials say was started by a cigarette. Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire.

Officials say the damage was mostly limited to smoke, and no serious injuries were reported.

The San Antonio Fire Department and San Antonio Police Department both responded to the scene as a precaution.

The incident remains under investigation.
