OLLU receives largest private donation in school’s history aimed at eliminating barriers for first-gen students

In addition to tuition help, students can receive funds for other costs like housing, laptops, and leadership development.

SAN ANTONIO — A cause for celebration at Our Lady of the Lake University.

On Wednesday, the institution received its largest private donation in school history. It is a $2.2 million grant from The Hector and Gloria López Foundation.

OLLU President Dr. Abel Chávez said over the last two years there has been a lot worth celebrating at the university. He also reflected on this latest donation.

“That is a massive nod of trust to us, to Our Lady of the Lake University,” Chávez said. “To have the trust from the López Foundation and then coming to the table with yet another first is pretty amazing and very significant.”

He said this historic donation will benefit first-generation students.

“It eliminates a major barrier for first-generation students and that is the financial barrier,” he said.

Chávez said around 40 percent of its students are first-generation.

“I too was a first-generation student,” he said, “And my experiences are not that dissimilar from what our students are going through today. “Lack of access to a mentor, lack of access to information, lack of financial resources.”

The recipients will be known as López scholars. In addition to tuition help, the students can receive funds for other costs like housing, laptops, and leadership development.

“It is just a very well designed robust grant to ensure that our students have everything they need to be successful,” Chávez said. “We will deliver.”

Chávez promises to deliver and to be there for the students to succeed.

“We will look over them,” he said. “We will watch over them.”

Right now, he said the university is in the process of identifying and creating an application process for students to apply. Chávez says it will start this Fall.
