On the other side of weekend closures, 2 new flyovers to open at San Antonio’s Loop 1604/I-10 interchange

After this weekend, drivers navigating the northwest side will have a pair of new flyovers to take advantage of at the major intersection.

SAN ANTONIO — As work continues to bolster drivers’ options at the Loop 1604/Interstate 10 interchange – one of the busiest in the San Antonio – TxDOT says next week’s commuters will be the first to use two new flyovers opening there by 5 a.m. Monday.

Those will mark the fifth and sixth flyovers to open at the intersection this year. By this time next week, 1604/I-10 will have seen seven flyovers introduced in crews’ attempts to decrease congestion on the northwest side.

The new ramps will make it easier to access either direction of Loop 1604 from I-10 East, according to Texas transportation officials. It’s all part of the North Loop 1604 Expansion Project, the ongoing $1.4 billion effort to revamp a 23-mile stretch of the corridor across the north side, including widening the corridor from four lanes to 10 lanes all the way across.

But first: another weekend of closures at the interchange to take note of. Here’s what to know.

Overnight

The following nightly closures at the interchange are scheduled for 9 p.m. to 5 p.m. through Monday.

  • Loop 1604 East frontage road limited from entrance ramp after La Cantera Parkway to Valero Way
  • Valero Way intersection at Loop 1604
  • Loop 1604 East and West frontage roads at the interchange
  • I-10 East main right two lanes
  • I-10 East frontage road from Via La Cantera to the interchange
  • I-10 East frontage road from La Cantera Parkway entrance ramp to Via La Cantera (local traffic only)
  • I-10 West to Loop 1604 East flyover ramp

During the day

The following nightly closures are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.

  • Loop 1604 East frontage road’s right lane closed from the entrance ramp after La Cantera Parkway to Valero Way
  • Valero Way intersection at Loop 1604
  • Loop 1604 East and West frontage roads at the interchange
  • I-10 East main right two lanes

About the project

Construction work is currently underway on five of six segments of the $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, managed by the Texas Department of Transportation.

The project, which began in 2021, is turning a 23-mile stretch of Loop 1604 on the north side into a 10-lane expressway featuring HOV lanes in both directions; increased accessibility for bicyclists and pedestrians on frontage roads; more direct connectors; and improved intersections.

The Loop 1604/I-10 interchange is experiencing a massive makeover as part of the project, with at least one more flyover opening for business by the end of 2026. One of the new flyovers, at 128 feet high, is the tallest in San Antonio.
