A major wreck on I-10 Eastbound in Chambers County causes traffic shutdown and emergency response.
CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas — One person is dead and another is seriously injured following a collision between an 18-wheller and an SUV towing a trailer Friday evening on Interstate 10, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The crash happened around 5:50 p.m. near the 818-mile marker on the westbound side of I-10. A 1993 Chevrolet Suburban, towing a trailer, was traveling in the outside lane with a truck tractor semi-trailer following behind, DPS said.
Investigators say the semi-truck struck the rear of the Chevrolet’s towed unit, causing the SUV to spin, collide with the left side of the semi, and come to rest facing east on top of the concrete barrier.
The driver of the Chevrolet was transported to a Beaumont hospital with possible life-threatening injuries. A passenger in the vehicle was taken to a Houston hospital by medical helicopter, where they died from injuries sustained in the crash. Authorities have not released the names of those involved, pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the semi-truck was not injured. Their identity has also not been released.
The crash shut down I-10 lanes for a while, but they are now reopened, according to DPS.
DPS Troopers continue to investigate the crash. No further information is available at this time.
