One man killed, another critically injured after suspected intoxicated driver strikes pedestrians near downtown

An intoxicated driver is accused of killing one pedestrian and critically injuring another after fleeing the scene near downtown Sunday morning, police said.

SAN ANTONIO — One man is dead and another is fighting for his life after police say an intoxicated driver struck two pedestrians early Sunday morning near downtown San Antonio.

Officers were called to the intersection of San Pedro Avenue and West Laurel Street around 12:42 a.m. for a major accident.

According to San Antonio police, the two men, ages 37 and 44, were walking through a parking lot when a large disturbance broke out involving a 36-year-old man.

Investigators said the suspect got into his vehicle and rapidly drove out of the parking lot, striking both pedestrians before fleeing the scene without stopping to help.

The 37-year-old man died at the scene. The second victim suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Police were able to locate the suspect nearby after receiving vehicle information. Officers said the driver was evaluated and found to be intoxicated.

The suspect was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault, collision involving death, and collision involving serious bodily injury.

Detectives say the investigation is ongoing and details remain preliminary.
