NEWTON COUNTY, Texas — A woman is dead following a tragic accident involving a lawnmower.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office says that a 51-year-old woman was killed Tuesday afternoon after an unmanned lawnmower drove over her at a residence on County Road 3139.
Deputies received an emergency call and arrived at the scene around 2:36 p.m.. There they found the victim trapped under a zero-turn riding lawn mower according to a news release from a Sheriff Colton Havard.
Sherriff Havard says deputies quickly removed the lawnmower and began life-saving measures, but despite their efforts the woman was tragically pronounced dead at the scene by Newton County Justice of the Peace, Judge Dana Ashmore.
According to the news release a preliminary investigation revealed that the woman had been mowing her yard when, for unknown reasons, she got off the lawnmower.
Deputies say they discovered that the mower’s safety control switch had been overridden and disconnected, allowing it to continue moving unattended. It is believed the mower then struck and ran over the woman.
The Newton County Sheriff’s office is still investigating the scene.
“The Newton County Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences and prayers to the family during this difficult time,” Sheriff Havard stated in the news release.
