One woman killed after major accident on Texas highway near Eagle Pass, authorities say

A one-vehicle accident near Eagle Pass left one woman dead and caused significant traffic delays on U.S. Highway 277.

EAGLE PASS, Texas — One woman was killed after a major one-vehicle accident near Eagle Pass Friday afternoon, authorities said.

On Friday, the Eagle Pass Police Department, along with a large emergency response team, were called to U.S. Highway 277, about eight miles east of Eagle Pass in Maverick County around 3 p.m.

Authorities said a 2005 white Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was traveling westbound down U.S. 277, when the left rear tire blew out, causing the truck to swerve off the road towards a ditch. The vehicle overturned and three of the four passengers were ejected from the vehicle. The truck then struck a private fence and came to a rest right side up.

According to Texas DPS, the driver was transported to a hospital in Eagle Pass. Two passengers were airlifted from the accident to University Hospital in San Antonio. The third passenger, identified as 31-year-old Smantha Serna, from Roma, Texas, was airlifted to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. Serna was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police initially said the crash caused traffic to be heavily backed up as helicopters flew in to airlift victims for advanced treatment.

DPS Troopers continue to investigate the crash.
