Oregon man dies in Galveston after being pulled from water in non-swimming zone, beach patrol says

An Oregon man drowned at Galveston Beach, marking the first fatality of the year.

GALVESTON, Texas — An Oregon man died hours after his body was pulled from the water in Galveston Saturday afternoon, according to Lt. Austin Kirwin with Galveston Island Beach Patrol.

It happened at 39th Street and Seawall Boulevard.

According to Kirwin, a lifeguard on patrol spotted the swimmer struggling around 4:23 p.m. Saturday in a no-swimming zone. A beach patrol supervisor responded and found the man unconscious and not breathing.

Emergency crews with the Galveston Area Ambulance Authority performed CPR before transporting the man to UTMB Health’s John Sealy Hospital. He died at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, while being treated in the ICU.

The man’s family is being supported by the Survivor Support Network through the Jesse Tree organization.

The man’s death marks the first fatal drowning of the year on Galveston’s beaches.
