San Antonio saw six people killed in shootings over the weekend, prompting calls for action from local community leaders.
SAN ANTONIO — It was a deadly and violent weekend in San Antonio. According to our reporting on Saturday and Sunday, six people were killed in different shootings across the city.
Executive Director of Big Mama’s Safe House Rose Williams is calling for an end to the violence. She’s also wanting other agencies to step up to help and bring change.
Williams said this weekend’s violence brings a lot of emotions.
“I am hurt,” she said. “We are confused, it doesn’t make sense what is going on.”
Williams is trying to make sense of the senselessness.
“What if it was your daughter, or your son, your mom or dad,” she said. “It is the human spirit, the human race, it affects all of us.”
Big Mama’s Safe House empowers communities and helps those impacted by gun violence. They also focus on the youth.
“We bring in a youth we try to assist,” she said. “The next night they are killed. It is very upsetting.”
After this weekend, Williams put out a call to action. She’s asking on community centers, churches and nonprofits to help curb the violence.
“We need to put this all in action in your own capacity whatever that looks like,” she said. “We just need to show love, kindness and compassion, because love covers all.”
Williams said one solution is focusing and fostering the youth.
“We need to get them active,” she said. “We need to get them busy in the summer, so they will be able to do things. And empower our youth to say hey you know what there’s another way. We talk about the violence, but on the flip side lets talk about that there are so many great opportunities, if we can just all collaborate.”
This Saturday, in an event Big Mama’s Safe House is remembering the people killed as well as survivors of gun violence. There will also be a balloon release. It will be at Wheatley Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
