Parents of Texas kindergartner upset with school officials actions after child was victim of alleged sexual assault

“They told us that two boys had him in the cafeteria, and they were putting their hands down his pants, touching him,” said the victim’s grandma.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — Parents of a kindergartner who attends a New Braunfels elementary school are upset with school officials after they say their child was allegedly sexually assaulted by two classmates.

The parents also allege it took hours for them to be notified, and say it wasn’t until they showed up to the school with police that an investigation began.

“Shock. Shock. It takes a couple minutes for it to even sink in, what someone is telling you.” Chloe Goodwin, victim’s grandma.

That is the reaction from Chloe Goodwin, after hearing her 6 year-old grandson was the victim of an alleged sexual assault.  Goodwin’s grandson attends Voss Farms Elementary, part of New Braunfels ISD.

“They told us that two boys had him in the cafeteria, and they were putting their hands down his pants, and touching him,” said Goodwin.

Goodwin says they were notified nearly three hours after the incident happened, that’s when she called New Braunfels police to meet them at the school.

According to Goodwin, during a conference, school officials told them they reviewed a video of the incident.

“That it was okay, because it only lasted for a couple of minutes, between when the first teacher left the cafeteria, and the second teacher came into the cafeteria.  My response to that was, I’m sorry, like if it was your child, would it be okay if they were sexually assaulted for just a couple minutes?” said Goodwin.

Goodwin says she’s upset with how the school handled the incident, including the time it took them to notify them. Goodwin also wants to know why the students were left unattended in the cafeteria, and why the district didn’t call police.

New Braunfels ISD issued the following statement:

“NBISD is aware of an incident involving students and takes matters of this nature very seriously. Authorities were notified and looked into the situation thoroughly. The appropriate actions have been taken to ensure the well-being and safety of all students involved. We remain committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all members of our school community.”

“They didn’t contact the police, we did. They did their best to make this go away, and do absolutely nothing,” said Goodwin.

Goodwin is also upset with the school resolution.  She says the school plans to move her grandson to another class, and will be issuing a stay way order for the other two students involved.

Goodwin is fighting back, filing a complaint with the Texas Education Agency, and feels her grandson should not be the one being moved from classes.

“He’s got disabilities that took a long time to get set up. He shouldn’t be the one disrupted and technically feeling like he’s being punished,” said Goodwin.

New Braunfels police say a report was filed, but could not talk about an open investigation or about an incident involving children.

Goodwin says her grandson is doing okay and they are working to ensure that he doesn’t suffer any long-term trauma because of the incident.
