Passenger dies in fiery crash near JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, driver believed to be intoxicated, police say

Law enforcement from multiple agencies had been following the speeding driver prior to the crash.

SAN ANTONIO — A passenger in a vehicle has died in a fiery crash near Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, police say.

It happened in front of the military base on Harry Wurzbach Road, just after 1:30 a.m. Monday.

San Antonio police tell us their officers, along with officers from Terrell Hills and Alamo Heights were all involved in a chase with the driver, before the car slammed into a brick pillar near Fort Sam Houston. 

Fort Sam Houston Police arrived after the crash, and pulled both the driver and passenger from the burning vehicle, officials said. The passenger died at the scene. Their identity has not yet been released.

The driver was taken to BAMC in critical condition and was determined to be intoxicated. 

Police said the driver had also evaded a traffic stop 20 minutes before to the crash.
