Migration trends show Texas holding strong as a top destination, while major states like California and New York see people leaving, ConsumerAffairs study finds.
DALLAS — Texas remains a top destination for Americans considering a move, ranking No. 6 nationwide for net migration, according to a new analysis from ConsumerAffairs.
Texas saw more interest from incoming movers than those looking to leave. Over the past year, 7,960 people said they want to move to Texas, compared to 6,669 residents who expressed interest in leaving.
The report ranks Texas just outside the top five states for net migration interest, underscoring continued demand for relocation to the state.
The top states people are moving to are largely concentrated in the South. Florida ranked No. 1, followed by North Carolina at No. 2 and South Carolina at No. 3. Arizona and Tennessee round out the top five, according to the report.
Researchers noted that nearly 46% of respondents are planning moves to Southern states, reflecting a broader trend toward the region.
At the same time, several large and coastal states are seeing more residents look to leave. California tops the list of states people are leaving, followed by New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Washington.
“States like Texas, Arizona and Florida top the list for Californians, offering a combination of relative affordability, lower or nonexistent state income taxes and strong job markets,” the report states.
The study surveyed more than 100,000 Americans who said they’re considering moving out of their current state between March 2025 and March 2026. Researchers excluded those planning to relocate within their current state.
