Person struck and killed by train just northwest of downtown

San Antonio police say a person died Sunday night after being struck by a southbound train just northwest of downtown. The case remains under investigation.

SAN ANTONIO — A person is dead after being struck by a train Sunday night just northwest of downtown, according to police.

Officers were called around 7:35 p.m. to the 700 block of West Craig Place near West Woodlawn Avenue for what police initially described as a vehicle-pedestrian incident.

When officers arrived, they learned the person had been on the train tracks as a southbound train approached, according to preliminary information from San Antonio police.

Police say the conductor noticed the person on the tracks and sounded the horn several times in an attempt to get their attention. The person did not move and was then struck by the train.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not publicly identified the victim.

“Around 7:30 pm Sunday evening, a Union Pacific train struck and killed an individual near 725 West Craig Place in San Antonio,” Union Pacific Railroad said in a statement. “San Antonio emergency services is responding to the incident, which is under investigation.  The train crew was not hurt, but witnessed the incident and is being offered support. No additional information is available about the individual.”

The case is being investigated as an apparent sudden death, and officers say the information released so far is preliminary.
