HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas — Phoenix Suns forward, Baylor alum and Harker Heights graduate Royce O’Neale returned to his hometown over the weekend to host his fourth annual youth basketball camp.
More than 100 local kids filled the gym, learning drills, honing skills and hearing advice from the nine-year NBA veteran. O’Neale, who starred at Harker Heights High School before playing at Baylor University, said giving back to the community that helped shape him is a priority every summer.
“It means a lot,” O’Neale said. “I was once in these kids’ shoes, going to camps. Then for myself, going to Harker Heights, earning all the accolades — being able to give back, have these kids come out and learn — it means a lot.”
O’Neale also called the experience a full-circle moment.
“It’s always a surreal feeling,” he said. “I mean growing up here in Killeen, Harker Heights and coming back here and having a camp, it just means a lot. You know my banner is still up there hanging up, so that’s a good sign.”
The free camp gave participants hands-on instruction from O’Neale and other coaches, along with opportunities for photos and autographs. Organizers say the event has grown each year and has become a staple for local youth athletes.
O’Neale, who is preparing for his second season with the Suns and ninth in the NBA, said he hopes the camp continues to expand and inspire future generations.
