PHOTOS: A new look at what the in-progress Alamo Museum will look like inside

The 100,000-square-foot centerpiece of the Alamo’s $550 million makeover is expected to open in 2027.

SAN ANTONIO — Construction continues on what the Alamo Trust says will be a “world-class” museum spotlighting the legacy of the San Antonio landmark, and we now have a better idea of what the facility will look like inside.

The Alamo Trust announced this week that a Sunday event “benefiting the preservation and future of the Alamo” raised more than $11.8 million. In addition, it received what it’s calling a “transformational” $10 million donation from the Steves Family, whose name will now be immortalized at the future museum’s Steves Family Event Center.

“For our family, the Alamo is not just a landmark—it’s part of who we are. As descendants of John W. Smith, a courier of the Alamo, we feel a deep responsibility to help preserve its legacy,” Sam Bell Steves is quoted as saying in a press release.

The event area will feature “a wraparound terrace overlooking the Alamo Church and the San Antonio skyline,” the Alamo Trust said.

The group shared renderings giving an idea of what that area of the museum will look ahead of its anticipated debut in 2027. The overall price tag for the ongoing Alamo makeover carries a roughly $550 million price tag, the Alamo Trust has said.

Construction of its years-in-the-planning visitor center and museum began Oct. 1, in a public ceremony attended by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Alamo Trust Executive Director Kate Rogers, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and other dignitaries. The Alamo Trust says the museum “will deepen public understanding of the Alamo” through galleries, a 4-D theater and focused curatorial efforts.

The 100,000-square-foot museum marks a repurposing of the historic Crockett and Woolworth buildings. It’s expected to be completed sometime in 2027; officials had previously hoped for a 2025 debut.

The Alamo Museum and Visitor Center will further contribute to a changing downtown landscape, which includes the debut of Civic Park down the street, ongoing plans to build a sports and entertainment district, and the construction of a new Missions baseball stadium expected to be built about a mile away. The Alamo Trust says the facility will create thousands of new jobs.

Construction on the museum was able to move forward after the Texas General Land Office and the city announced a deal in 2023 with the owner of an Alamo-area bar who had rejected numerous land purchase offers. City Council had previously approved the use of eminent domain to seize the property, escalating the stakes of the impasse.

The Alamo Collections Center opened in spring 2023, fulfilling another objective for the multipronged Alamo Plan, the overview for the Texas landmark’s revitalization.
