San Antonio’s proposed downtown ballpark inches closer to reality as partners reveal new designs before a crucial review on April 1.
SAN ANTONIO — New renderings for a proposed downtown ballpark were released as project partners prepare for a key design review next week, marking a significant step forward in a long-anticipated development near San Pedro Creek.
Designated Bidders LLC, owners of the San Antonio Missions, are collaborating with the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, Weston Urban and global design firm Populous on plans for a multiuse facility in the city’s downtown area.
The project is scheduled to go before the city’s Historic Design and Review Commission on April 1, where officials will consider the development plan in what stakeholders describe as an important milestone.

Randy Smith, a board member of Designated Bidders and principal of Weston Urban, said the proposed ballpark and surrounding development represent years of coordinated public and private investment.
“This community gathering place, in tandem with the adjacent mixed-use residential developments, is truly the culmination of well over a decade of public and private effort to breathe vibrancy into the San Pedro Creek Culture Park,” Smith said.
Smith added that the broader area has undergone significant transformation, citing nearby projects including the University of Texas at San Antonio’s campus expansion and Frost Tower.
“It’s been such a team endeavor,” he said. “Between UTSA’s campus expansion, Frost Tower, the ballpark and our residential developments, the creek is now an unparalleled place for all San Antonians to live, work, learn and, maybe most importantly, play.”
Project leaders said the newly released renderings reflect ongoing design progress ahead of the commission’s review.
“We’re very pleased with how the design is progressing and we look forward to hearing the commission’s feedback and proceeding to the next step to finalize a project that we are sure will serve our community for generations to come,” said Bruce Hill, board chairman of the San Antonio Missions.
Following completion of the design phase and the commission’s review, project partners said financing and construction scheduling will move forward.
