About 30 high schoolers and athletes, powered by breakfast tacos, came together to help clean up the community.
SAN ANTONIO — This week’s much-needed but destructive storms brought out the best in Sabinal’s youth.
A precursor to the deadly flooding that arrived Thursday morning, severe weather uprooted trees and snapped large branches on local yards Tuesday in the small South Texas community that lies about 60 miles west of San Antonio.
Two days later, about 30 student-athletes at Sabinal High School volunteered to clean up downed limbs and scattered brush, Sabinal ISD said. As they got to work, local restaurants and supply stories provided them with breakfast tacos, work gloves and water.
“It’s about a sense of community and helping people we know need a bit of help,” said Tori Esquivel, who will be a senior at Sabinal High School next year. “Together we can make a huge impact.”
The young athletes’ coaches organized the charitable efforts, which resulted in hazards being cleared off the properties of 10 families.
