KERRVILLE, Texas — UPDATE
After waiting for over a year for someone to notice him, Pilot has gone home to a loving home. The shelter tells us that numerous KENS 5 viewers contacted them about Pilot after seeing our story. And one of them made it official on Friday and Pilot went home.
We wish them all of the best things in life.

Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.
This week’s Forgotten Friend is Pilot, an almost 2-year-old Lab mix who was brought to the Kathleen Cailloux Humane Society in Kerrville a little over one year ago in March of 2024. He was roaming around Kerrville with his sister, who has since been adopted. Now he’s all alone and starting to show signs of depression as people walk past his kennel without choosing him.
“We chose Pilot this week, not because he has been here the longest, but because we’ve noticed he has really started to shut down,” said Kathryn Burniston. “He was such a happy boy when his sister was at the shelter and they got to play together every day. Once she got adopted he really started to get depressed.”
Shelter staff said they found another friend for Pilot to play with and he loves hanging out with other dogs. And bonus… he even likes cats!
“He has gotten along with every dog we’ve introduced him to so he would be an easy addition to a family with another dog,” said Kathryn.
Pilot loves people of all sizes, young and old. Shelter staff believe he would do well with a family that has kids but really any type of home would work for him. The more active the better, but he also likes to just hang out as well. Pilot has never met anyone he doesn’t like, whether they have two legs or four.
“Over time he’s really gotten less hopeful and is so sad when visitors walk past him without paying him much attention,” said shelter staff. “He longs for a forever home where he can cuddle with his new owner and play in a yard.”
He has tons of energy and loves to swim in the dog pool and just run around in the yard when given the opportunity. But he can also be calm and mellow and just relax as he snuggles with you.
“Pilot is cute little goofball in the best possible sense,” said shelter staff.
He adores being petted, playing with toys and as we mentioned, he loves to play in water. So if you have a pool, he’d be in heaven! He may be medium-sized, but he also likes to sit in laps.
He’s healthy, neutered, current on all of his vaccinations and just waiting for you to bring him home and love him.

“We don’t know why Pilot continues to be overlooked because he is the friendliest, sweetest boy,” said shelter staff. “It was sad to for him to see his sister leave, but he knows his forever home is out there waiting for him, too.”
If you are interested in adopting Pilot and being his forever family you can visit the Kathleen Cailloux Humane Society in Kerrville at 2900 Junction Highway. The shelter is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until Noon and again from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. The adoption fee for Pilot is $85.
Applications can also be emailed to them at hsk@hctc.net. The shelter’s phone number is (830) 367-7722. Shelter staff says that it might be better to call or go in person because they check voicemail more frequently than emails.
For whoever adopts Pilot, Lucy’s Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free “Glow Up” Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy’s most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!
The shelter says they can always use volunteers at their resale shop, which helps to support the shelter. The resale shop is staffed entirely by volunteers. You can support them by donating gently used items, or by stopping by and purchasing stuff. The shop is affectionately known as the “pick of the litter resale shop.” The shop is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. They are closed on Sundays and on major holidays. Call them at (830) 367-7755.
Monetary donations are always welcome, too. Send them to their post office box at P.O. Box 294810 Kerrville, Texas 78029.
They always need things to help with the care of the animals. Check out their current wish list below.

Remember when you adopt a shelter pet, you save two lives… the one you bring home with you and the one that now will be saved because the shelter has more room.
