Austin police said the car that was not carrying the child took off from the scene and later revealed the vehicle was stolen.
AUSTIN, Texas — Jennifer Thornton said she remembers every second of a car crash that sent her 7-year-old son flying from the vehicle they were in.
The crash happened in the area of Menchaca Road and Boyds Way on Aug. 2. Thornton said she, her son, and her roommate were on the road when they felt the impact.
“I don’t know how many times we flipped,” said Thornton. “All I can remember thinking is, ‘Please let him be OK. Please let my baby be OK.'”
Thornton said her son was ejected from the vehicle and found lying on the ground — blood spilling from his mouth, in a fetal position. Her little boy suffered severe injuries, including a fractured skull, a fractured spine, and a torn spleen.
So far, she said he’s had multiple surgeries but is alive. Thornton suffered minor injuries.
“[To] walk away with scratches so I can take care of my baby and be there with him every second — I have never been so blessed in my life,” Thornton said. “I’m not separated from him.”
Austin police said the other vehicle involved in the crash was stolen, and the people who were inside took off before officers arrived.
Thornton praised the people who witnessed the crash. She said neighbors in the area helped emergency crews and police officers get to the scene quickly. Thornton even noted one woman — Bri Rodriguez — has been helping her since she’s been at the hospital.
Rodriguez started two GoFundMe pages. One for the driver, who is Thornton’s roommate, and the other GoFundMe for Thornton and her son.
Thornton said she is beyond grateful her son survived the crash but wants justice. She hopes the people who drove off come forward.
“Whoever you are, you two are really lucky that he survived because mama bear style for real,” Thornton said. “I’m going to let justice do what justice does. Because I believe in our justice system. It’s going to prevail.”
Police said no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. If you have any information on the crash, you’re asked to call Austin police. Remember, you can remain anonymous.
