‘Please report it right away’ | Medina County opens local resource for sexual assault exams amid underreporting concerns

Officials say until recently, victims in Medina County had to drive to San Antonio to get a sexual assault exam done.

SAN ANTONIO — For all of 2024 there were only three reported cases of adult sexual assault in Medina County. According to the Medina County District Attorney’s Office, it is a crime that’s unreported.

Assistant Criminal District Attorney Scott Simpson works for the Medina County District Attorney’s Office.

“There is no way there has only been three adult sexual assaults,” Simpson said. “The one message I would like to get out of this interview, is please report it right away.”

Simpson admits it’s not an easy process and can be hard for the victim. And until recently, victims in Medina County had to drive to San Antonio to get a sexual assault exam done.

“Maybe that’s the deal breaker,” he said.

Now he said Medina Regional is offering the exam through an outside contract. Simpson said they just did their first exam last week.

“So, a sexual assault nurse examiner from around the area is committing, if they are notified they will be at the hospital in about 90 minutes,” he said. “So now we have people in Medina County, that can stay here in Medina County.”

Simpson adds prosecuting these cases can be an uphill battle.

“We are ready, willing and able to prosecute these cases effectively,” he said. “Can’t guarantee you the results because every case is different. It depends on the facts of the case.”

Regardless, Simpson wants victims to come forward.

“We are not going to sit there and look at you differently,” he said. “I think they feel like, maybe I shouldn’t have had so many drinks, that doesn’t matter. That doesn’t give somebody the right to have sex against your will.”
