This sweet 13-pound senior girl will follow you like a shadow, smile when she sees you, and fill your home with gentle love.💙
CANYON LAKE, Texas — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.
This week’s Forgotten Friend is a tiny dog with a huge heart, and a whole lot of love left to give.
Meet Pokie, an 8-year-old Chihuahua and Terrier mix who weighs just 13 pounds. She came to Canyon Lake Animal Shelter Society (CLASS) about three weeks ago, not because she did anything wrong, but because her owner had to move into assisted living. Shelter staff say it was a heartbreaking goodbye for both of them.
“Pokie is the kind of dog who quietly steals your heart and holds onto it forever,” one staff member shared. “She has a gentle presence and a calm sweetness that makes you instantly want to protect her.”
Pokie spent much of her early life outdoors and only recently learned what it meant to be an indoor dog — cuddling on the couch, sleeping in a warm bed, and following her favorite people from room to room. Despite all the changes she’s been through, staff say Pokie remains incredibly kind and affectionate.
“She is sooo sweet and loves to snuggle,” a caregiver said. “She’s like a little shadow — she follows you everywhere. When she gets excited, she actually smiles.”
Pokie does well with kids, mostly ignores other dogs, and is completely unfazed by cats. While she’s calm and cuddly, she also has a playful side. She loves squeaky toys, enjoys a good game of tug, and has been known to gather all her toys on the couch like prized possessions. Every now and then, she surprises everyone with joyful little zoomies, hopping on and off the couch as if she’s forgotten she’s a senior pup.
Pokie is spayed, vaccinated, and currently heartworm positive, but the shelter is covering her treatment until she’s fully cleared.
“She has so much joy left in her,” staff said. “All she wants is a safe place to land and someone to love her back.”
Pokie is hoping for a calm home with plenty of cuddle time, a place where she can finally settle in and be spoiled the way she deserves. If you’re looking for a loyal companion who will give you her whole heart, Pokie just might be your perfect match.
If you’d like to adopt Pokie, please contact the Canyon Lake Animal Shelter Society. To fill out an application, visit their website here.
For whoever adopts Pokie, Lucy’s Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free “Glow Up” Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy’s most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!

Remember when you adopt a shelter pet, you save two lives… the one you bring home with you and the one that now will be saved because the shelter has more room.
