Police: 4 hospitalized after chain-reaction highway crash near downtown San Antonio

Four vehicles in all were involved in the Friday-morning wreck, which forced detours for a few hours.

SAN ANTONIO — Four people ranging in age from 20 to 51 years old were taken to the hospital after a major crash that shut down part of the highway near downtown San Antonio for hours on Friday.

Law enforcement responded to the area of I-35 South at the I-37 South exit at 9:14 a.m., where police say four vehicles were involved in the chain-reaction crash. According to an SAPD incident report, a box truck rear-ended a big rig, causing it to caught on fire and strike a pickup truck towing a trailer; that truck then hit the fourth vehicle, a car with three occupants.

The drivers of the pickup truck, big rig and box truck that initiated the crash were all taken to a San Antonio hospital, as well as the passenger riding in the box truck. The 20-year-old driver of the box truck had serious injuries, according to SAPD.

Officials said the information was preliminary and could change as the investigation continues. It isn’t yet known what caused the box truck to initially crash into the big rig.

The wreck shut down the ramp connecting I-35 South to I-37 South for some time, but it’s since reopened.
